Geoffrey Hahn - 2011 Spotlight Non-Classical Voice Runner-Up
What was your experience like participating in Spotlight from auditions to master classes?
Participating in the Spotlight awards was the best decision I've made. The Spotlight awards were unique in that the auditions promoted a friendly and constructive environment rather than the media's portrayal of auditioning, aka, American Idol. I enjoyed every minute of it.
What was it like performing on the stage of the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion?
I'm not going to lie here?I was nervous to the point of sickness as soon as the curtain was raised! However, as soon as I started into my song the nerves gave way to emotional energy as I felt a connection with the crowd. I felt on top of the world.
What is your favorite thing about performing or studying your art form?
My favorite thing about singing would have to be the communication aspect. Being able to tell a story through another character is fascinating to me. One minute I'll be a part of the French Revolution and the next I'll be in the Land of Oz.
Who is your favorite singer/dancer/performer/composer, etc. and why?
My favorite singer would have to be Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. He may not have the biggest voice but his interpretation, musicality, and overall connection to his art form goes unmatched.
Who has been your biggest fan and has given you the most support?
My mom has been my number one fan, through thick and thin. I wouldn't be where I am today without her help.
What other skills or talents do you have that other people may not know about you?
Tennis is one of my hidden skills. I played varsity on our high school team for two years and I love playing blues on the harmonica.
Are there any setbacks that you have overcome which have challenged you to be a better artist?
The biggest setback has been overcoming the stereotypical image my friends have of a young male vocalist. It was much harder at a younger age, but as my skills improved, my fan base increased and more of my friends began to understand my passion for singing. I worked much harder initially to be great so that I could be understood and accepted doing what I love to do.
What qualities do you believe are your biggest strengths?
My ability to listen to criticism and make adjustments. My approach to interpretation of lyrics in music as well as the bridge I've made between classical and non-classical voice.
What are your dreams/goals in life?
One of my dreams would be to perform in Les Miserables one day in a professional company. The other dream would be to perform on the stage of the Met!
What are your plans after high school?
I am attending the Columbia/Juilliard Exchange program in the fall, which will allow me to continue my artistic studies while receiving a wonderful liberal arts education from Columbia!
